Health maintenance and check-ups

Children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus should be every two to three
Months make an appointment in the diabetes outpatient clinic with a legal guardian. The HbA1c (long-term blood sugar value) in the blood should be determined every two to three months.

The HbA1c indicates the average blood glucose level over the last two to three months.
The HbA1c value should be below 7.0% in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (according to the German Diabetes Society).
If the HbA1c is below 7.0%, the risk of late complications due to high blood glucose levels in diabetes is particularly low.

  • increase high HbA1c values over a longer period of time, e.g. the risk of damage to the eyes, kidneys and all blood vessels and nerves
  • To evaluate the metabolic situation, the “Time in Range” (TIR or time in the target range) statistics can also be used in the tissue glucose meter
  • With a target range of 70 – 180 mg/dl (3.9-10 mmol/l), the TIR should be at least 70%.
  • A blood test (including kidney values, thyroid values, blood lipids, celiac disease values) and a urine test should be carried out once a year as a precaution
  • From the age of 11 or after 5 years of diabetes, the ocular fundus should be examined once a year by the ophthalmologist and the feet should be examined by the diabetologist
  • the results of all check-ups should be entered in the health record of the German Diabetes Society (DDG).
  • Short-term elevated blood or tissue sugar levels without a ketone are usually harmless
  • if high blood or high glucose levels occur, discuss them as objectively as possible and consider how to avoid them
  • Please do not use the description “poor” to evaluate blood or tissue glucose values, but only use emotionally less important attributions such as high or low
  • the health and health maintenance of people depends on many external and internal factors

What promotes the health of people with type 1 diabetes mellitus and what does not? Here are a few examples of things that can have an impact:

health-promoting

  • enough sleep
  • sufficient rest periods
  • healthy eating
  • enough exercise
  • social contacts
  • fun
  • sense of achievement
  • HbA1c below 7.0
  • Time in Range (TIR) i.e. time in the target area min. 70 %
  • regular check-ups
  • fresh air

Harmful to health

  • too much stress
  • too less sleep
  • unhealthy diet
  • Nicotine, alcohol and other drugs
  • little movement
  • polluted and stuffy air
  • HbA1c over 7.5%
  • high blood pressure
  • high blood lipids
  • high uric acid levels
  • sequelae and other diseases
